Introduction

The Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Trust, is a non-governmental organization dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late Wongchhu Sherpa, a visionary mountaineer, tourism entrepreneur, and social worker from Tapting-1, Chyangba, Solukhumbu, Nepal. Born in 1967, Wongchhu scaled Mt. Everest twice and founded the Everest Summiteers Association Nepal, leaving an indelible mark on his community. Following his passing in 2015, the Trust was founded to carry forward his dream of uplifting remote Himalayan communities through transformative initiatives in Education, Health, Livelihood, and Water and Sanitation.

The Trust is committed to improving the quality of life for the people of Solukhumbu District and beyond by addressing critical needs and fostering sustainable development. Inspired by Wongchhu Sherpa’s passion for service, we empower communities through impactful projects that create lasting change.

  • Wongchhu Biswo Darshan Primary School: Established in 1989 in Chyangba, Solukhumbu, this school offers local children access to education, eliminating the need for long, arduous journeys.
  • Girls Hostel Project: A safe, modern residential facility empowering young girls to pursue their education and achieve their potential.
  • Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Primary Hospital: Our flagship project, this 15-bed hospital in Khamding, Solukhumbu, serves over 30,000 people with vital services like maternity care, diagnostics, and minor surgeries. Launched in October 2022 with partners like the Wilderness Medical Society and Musa Masala, it is a cornerstone of regional healthcare.
  • Musa Masala Dental Camp: An annual initiative delivering oral health education and dental care to remote communities, addressing a critical health need.
  • Nursing Scholar Project: Training local healthcare professionals to ensure the sustainability of our hospital and strengthen the region’s medical capacity.
  • Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Volleyball Tournament: A community-building event in Khamding that celebrates Wongchhu’s legacy through sport and unity.
  • Water and Sanitation Projects: Initiatives like the Wongchhu Hydro-power and Water Projects provide clean water and electricity, enhancing public health and economic opportunities.
